Feeling a bit stir-crazy about having lived in Dubai for several months without seeing any of the rest of the Gulf, my husband and I decided to plan a trip to Muscat, Oman over the weekend. Just an hour’s flight away, this city is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of big city Dubai and see another country.
When we touched down at the small airport, we were taken to our hotel by a friendly Omani taxi driver. He pointed out a few notable landmarks along the way like the Grand Mosque and Palace, and we practiced our Arabic with him along the way.
For a little R&R we stayed at the Shangri-La Al Bandar Resort outside of the main city. This massive hotel complex features three hotels right next to each other, all nestled into the mountains adjacent to the sea.
The highlight of the trip was going on a boat cruise out on the Gulf of Oman. The mountains soar out of the water to astonishing heights. It creates dramatic, breath taking views and we got to explore lots of caves and crannies in the rock face while out on the ocean.
One of my other favorite parts about the resort was the huge breakfast buffet with Omani pancakes and dragon fruit, two of my new favorite things since moving to the GCC. We also spent a lot of time riding on inner tubes on top of a long lazy river that looped back and forth between the different resorts.
Overall, it was pretty much the perfect getaway trip to an isolated location in the middle of beautiful natural wonders on Oman’s coast. We can’t wait to go back and explore Muscat more as well as other areas in Oman.
